Let’s face it, it was inevitable. The NFL is a business and in all businesses, tough decisions must be made, and for the Steelers letting go of longtime WR Hines Ward was one of them. Ward has been a Steeler all 14 years he has been in the NFL, he is currently 8th all time in career receptions (1000) and 18th in total yards (12083), but he hasn’t been a factor as of late for Pittsburgh, especially this past season (46 rec, 381 yards).
Don’t expect anyone to pick up Ward, he’s an older receiver who hasn’t been able to do much of anything lately and has lost the step he once had, as a receiver and blocker. If anyone signs him, it’s more for a veteran presence than it is a production-based deal (see Joe Horn in Atlanta in 2007), but I honestly expect a retirement announcement from him within the coming months.
Congratulations Hines Ward on an outstanding career.
